Barbara Cleary Raku
Original Fine Art, Prints, and Designs from the
Collection of Barbara Cleary Fine Art
The Raku technique involves removing glazed ceramics from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and placing them in a combustible material like sawdust or newspaper. This process deprives the piece of oxygen, leading to a stunning array of colors within the glaze. When Raku firing is done without glaze, the oxygen is extracted from the clay itself, resulting in areas with a beautiful matte black finish.
One of the fascinating aspects of Raku firing is that it produces completely one-of-a-kind pieces. There is always an element of surprise and uncertainty regarding the final outcome. Each Raku firing creates a unique design, allowing for less control over the end result.
Barbara's Raku is some of her most stunning work and is depicted below. Her Raku pieces are not currently for sale.
